Zunari's Homeland
I'm just taking a break from modelling for now, and am playing around with a program called terragen. It's chief use is making skyboxes, but it can also be useful for artistic wallpapers like this.

The idea was to make a group of islands that would resemble Zunari's (the shop guy in WW) homeland, which is supposed to be all cold and snowy. Originally I had it much, much more snowy, but I decided it wasn't very visually engaging, so I severely turned down the snow and added plenty of rock and a little grass. In retrospect I wish I had kept more of the snow. Oh well.

I don't even want to know how many quadrilaterals this had, it took my computer 11 minutes to render.

nice work. i never even thought of imagining what zunari's homeland would look like. would've been cool if they added something like this in WW, having to constantly switch between the grapple hook and the deku leaf, etc.
Koroks Rock  [Feb 08, 2005 at 04:25 AM]
i dunno about that kind of travel- according to terragen, the tallest of those islands is several hundred meters tall. the smallest isle is ~ sixty meters wide. it's a big place. though having some islands like hm's impression in WW would be great, i'd enjoy that

ah right...maybe not, then.

Somebody's done their research. Good one, KR. I especially like the clouds and the water.
Koroks Rock  [Feb 08, 2005 at 07:21 PM]
nah, you pretty much have to memorize the number terragen gives you, in order to get the camera angles and light directions, etc, correct. this only shows a third of the seascape i made, but it was the best/most impressive third, so i took the camera to the top of another mountain.

Wow, I admire your great intellect and computer skills, KR. What I admire even more is the effect of the water. If they had used these kind of graphics on the Wind Waker I wouldn't weep in bitterness at night.
Koroks Rock  [Feb 13, 2005 at 07:23 PM]
thanks for the praise...? not something i get very often, it's kind of odd feeling. I dunno though, the WW effects were great. the fact is that water like this requires enormous memory and computational power. i have 1024 megs of RAM (yes, i have a whole gig, shut up i'm not rich), and a 2.08 Athlon AMD processor- neither of those should be sneezed at, but this still took forever to render. i doubt the GC could handle that much strain.

*rich*
Koroks Rock  [Feb 15, 2005 at 04:54 AM]
who, you or me? let me assure i'm not rich- i just happen to be a workaholic, and must do something constantly. if there's no school i get a job. when the work/school day is over i browse here and labor on my game MOD. and make velentines flash animations, which is taking longer than it should. damn you mr sandman, i don't have time to sleep, leave me alone.
dudeofrandomness  [Feb 15, 2005 at 04:10 PM]
*punches the rich boy* you people and you're swearing KR you have too much to do. And you do too much.
Koroks Rock  [Feb 16, 2005 at 02:14 AM]
I have observed such many times. And my more attentive teachers have too: "Goodness, you do WHAT at night? When do you sleep? Are you planning to take over sony or something?" no ma'am. just the gaming world. sony has been rejected from my fold. "Weirdo... you need more sleep. And on-time assignments."
dude_thats_evil  [Feb 23, 2005 at 12:28 AM]
I find this pic to very dull................................................................and by that i mean its almost too good, i think the clouds, and water are amazing. It would be nice to see what kind of things you could produce if you got some sleep.
Koroks Rock  [Feb 23, 2005 at 01:40 AM]
psh. if i slept half my creativity would vanish. of course, that half concerns itself solely with coffee, which has no connection to zelda so ya'll don't see it, but i like that half.
dude_thats_evil  [Feb 24, 2005 at 07:33 AM]
when are you going to add something new, its been quite a while? but i guess if you are going to be running the gameing world soon i guess we'll let you off for a little while. *goes to sleep*
CharacterintheBack  [Feb 24, 2005 at 08:03 AM]
*pounds on KR* SLEEP! NOW! I COMMAND THEE! You shouldn't be so tired.. and coffee shouldn't rule your world!
dude_thats_evil  [Feb 27, 2005 at 09:07 AM]
who are you calling rich dude of random richness, your so freaking rich. Especially compaired to one like me, i sleep in a drawer
Koroks Rock  [Feb 27, 2005 at 03:19 PM]
i believe DOR was refering to me, DTE, b/c of my accumulated hardware. trust me, i'm perfectly broke right now, gather my hardware to me consumes my meager resources with alacrity. c0ff33 rules the whole world CitB, not just mine. you should know that and DTE, my mod is not the only reason I haven't posted lately. i have three AP classes, two honors, and an Ind Study class consuming my sketching time inschool, and track and my now-unzelda mod consuming what's left. it's difficult to attend this site, much less post on it.
dude_thats_evil  [Feb 28, 2005 at 01:52 AM]
sorry, but Random dude is still freaking rich........................*breaks into random dude's house and steals/borrows some money and has a little bit of food too*
dudeofrandomness  [Feb 28, 2005 at 04:21 PM]
*alarm goes off* lol KR you overload yourself. As if I haven't said that before. But, as for your classes consuming sketch time...isn't it true that you post during a class? It seems to be so. Tell me if Im right. I know Im right.
Koroks Rock  [Feb 28, 2005 at 09:43 PM]
ja, i have an independant study which occasionally allows me to post during school hours. depends on what i'm working on. the study is in graphic design, so i can often get online for the purposes of image collection. good of you to notice. also, we have a good number of snow days up here. today is a snow day, and i've shoveling and working on my mod all morning.

*mumble mumble curse you people and your snow days mumble mumble*

this is the first school day i've been back this week, and it was a 2 hour delay. ha HA! i laugh at the puny flatlanders who get out of school at reasonable dates! (we're up to June 6th now, and probably later)
dudeofrandomness  [Mar 04, 2005 at 03:44 PM]
Oh, ya' there's one bonus for me. Never later than the limit when you never have a snow-day. I should look and see when that is exactly. So...to get even farther off subject, what classes are you taking?
the_ocarina_of_time  [May 27, 2005 at 10:22 PM]
after seeing this I downloaded Terragen, and now I'm hooked. Among the many (50) things I did was my own version of Zunari's homeworld. I have to say I like KR's better. (I didn't upload 50 things, just the one, for now.)
Matetrix  [Aug 11, 2005 at 11:14 PM]
nice
the_ocarina_of_time  [Apr 21, 2006 at 03:16 AM]
it's really easy to make impressive-looking stuff with Terragen. Unfortunately for you, I'm now good at Terragen, and I can see the things where you slacked off. like the clouds... i think? I would have made the sky a bit darker near the top, and would have taken out the pointy islands. more snow would have been good, you're right. there's something about the water color, it's sort of... bland. And the rocks are too light and plain. But these, of course, are the criticisms of a guy who's spent countless hours on Terragen. it's your own fault, you know, so no complaining. I really do like the sense of size in this picture, that's usually my biggest problem. btw, do you know why it gives you a quadrilateral count rather than a polygon count?
