Chapter 1: The Kafei Mystery
The clock tower turned its circle, ticking repeatedly. The carpenters were working as usual to prepare South Clock Town for the Carnival of Time. Wooden beams were piled in heaps around the square, and the sounds of sawing and hammering could be heard from some distance away. A dog ran to and fro, barking at the workers.
Kafei crept towards the mailbox. He didn't expect anyone to notice him in this busy area, but walked with caution anyway. He did not realize that he was being watched.
"I think that's him." Tatl said.
Link stood behind the half-finished clock bridge. As Kafei lifted his hand to deposit the letter, he snapped two shots with his pictobox, and took three more as the blue-haired boy ran back to the Laundry Pool. He flipped through the box's slots and grinned.
"Am I a great pictographer or not?"
---
Link went to show the pictographs to Anju.
"Welcome to the Stock Pot Inn...Umm...Are you...staying the night? Oh my! I wonder...Did I by chance ask you the same thing earlier? My mother is always telling me to remember our customers' faces, but I tend to forget them...Please enjoy the Carnival of time."
She wouldn't say anything else. Madame Aroma didn't react either.
"Darn it." Link grumbled. "I was sure that would work." Then he noticed the post man running by. He hastily put on the Kafei Mask. "Hey, Mr., have you seen this guy?"
"...I don't know where he is. Even if I knew, it would be a secret."
"Thanks for being no help whatsoever." Link called as the mail carrier jogged off. He kicked the side of the Inn. "Oh, well. I'll figure it out soon enough! For I am a member of the BOMBERS' SECRET SOCIETY OF JUSTICE FOREVER!!" he waved the Bombers' notebook dramatically.
"Hey!" shouted Jim. "It won't stay a secret if you yell it across the plaza!"
"Okay, okay. Sorry."
---
Kafei was now sitting on his makeshift bed in the back of the curiosity shop. Soon the fiend who'd stolen his wedding mask would come and try to sell it. Then he'd be able to get it back. He just had to be patient.
In the meantime...what would Anju think when she got his letter? Kafei truly hoped that she would trust him. He stood up and began pacing the room. She was sure to write back. The postman might even bring her letter today.
BING!
Someone had rung the bell by the bridge! Kafei ran to the door and looked outside. It wasn't the postman, just a boy wearing a green tunic. He quickly shut the door again.
"He's fast." Link muttered. He looked at the bell pedestal.
"Those with business, please ring bell. No solicitors." read Tatl.
Link waited ten minutes, and then whacked it with his sword. The door opened once more. Kafei stepped out and glanced around. Link tried to run over before he could get back inside, but accidentally slipped on a rock and fell in the river.
"Aahhhhh!"
SPLASH!
He swam to the surface. "Stupid rock- oh, look. Rupees. Cool."
A glance at the door told him it was too late to get in now. Link climbed out of the water and hit the bell again. Kafei was pretty sure he knew who it was going to be, but didn't want to risk not seeing the postman.
He pushed open the door. Link charged. But Kafei slammed it shut just in time so that Link crashed into its wooden front.
Tatl snickered.
Link thought -wisely- that he had better wait a while before ringing again. So he went and deposited his newly-found rupees. Then he came back.
But this time he was going for a new strategy. Link walked straight past the bell, over the bridge, and up to the door. Then he pulled out his bow and shot the bell.
BING!
Link ducked behind a bush and pulled on his least favorite mask.
Kafei opened the door.
"SURPRISE!" Link leapt out from his hiding place.
"AAUGH!" Kafei saw in horror that he was wearing a hideous mask- some sort of ugly fairy with three huge pink pigtails! He wrenched the door shut with a clang.
Link glared at the locked entryway. "You think you can keep me from solving this, do you? Well, just wait! I don't give up that easily!"
"Would you mind taking that Great Fairy Mask off already?" asked Tatl. "It's creeping me out."
---
Alright. So ringing the bell wouldn't work. It didn't matter. Link would just find another way to advance this side quest!
He put on the Bremen Mask and started marching around the Curiosity Shop in circles. The dog from South Clock Town followed. It yipped in time joyfully.
"NOW what are you doing?!" Tatl demanded.
"It's a battle of wills. If I keep this up, eventually he'll have to come out here to figure out what I'm doing!"
Link did this for ten hours. Nothing happened.
"Somehow...I think you're doing something wrong." Tatl stated dryly.

This is based off me trying to do the Kafei quest and getting nowhere...I was having fun tormenting him by ringing the bell over and over. I guess Link wanted to startle him so he could interrogate him before he ran back inside.
