Chapter 1: The Little Dimension Traveler with a Daemon

Author's note: Before you start flaming, saying that I got a bunch of stuff wrong about The Golden Compass, I've only seen the movie. Feel free to give criticism, but anyone who flames without explanation, here's your reply: 'Pretty flames'. Thank you.

** Castle Town **
Link slowly walked through the gates of Castle Town, spaced out thinking of what happened tomorrow when Link took of the journey to defeat Ganondorf. Tomorrow, if Link was correct, was the day he defeated Ganondorf. Link looked up; the sky had a few clouds here and there, but was otherwise a pure blue. He smiled, unlike the day he defeated Ganondorf, the sky wasn’t that evil black it had been.

Link started to look down again, but in a flash, he was pushed down by something, landing on his back with a young looking pure black wolf on his chest. He flung the wolf off of him, and it landed on its back with a yelp, sliding across the stone path. The wolf slowly got up as Link stood again and looked up at him.

“Are you Link?” The wolf spoke in a boy’s voice, and Link just starred at it confusedly. “I’ll repeat myself, ARE, YOU, LINK?!” He barked at him, and he slowly nodded cautiously. “Well then follow me! It’s Zelda!” He exclaimed and started running through town, Link took off behind her.

The wolf led him to a group of guards circled around something or someone. The wolf transformed into a rat and ran in between two guards. Link pushed his way through, seeing a black haired girl about thirteen with her back turned and kneeling over an unconscious Sheik. The girl turned her head as the rat that the wolf turned into climbed onto her shoulder.

“Oh thank the goddesses Link!” The girl exclaimed. Her blood-shade red eyes were full of worry and her skin paler then it usually was, and it was usually pale.

“Aqua, what’s wrong with her?” Link asked as he kneeled beside her, placing a hand on Sheik’s forehead. It had been awhile since Zelda had disguised herself as Sheik again, so Link naturally found it weird that she had.

“I don’t know, I just found her like this” Aqua replied, and then the rat spoke up in the same voice again.

“Hey Aqua, I’ve picked up on some of the Hylian creatures, do you think maybe I could try…?” She asked her, her voice worried as well for the Hylian Princess.

“You can try Diodium, but remember, if you die,” Aqua started, looking at the rat on her shoulder.

“You die too, I know. I really don’t think I’ll die, Aqua. Think about it!” The rat, apparently named Diodium barked back.

“Good point.” Aqua said as Diodium transformed into a pinkish fairy. “Oh goddesses I hate that colour” Aqua added under her breath. Diodium hadn’t noticed as he flew down near Sheik’s head, and threw some pinkish dust down at her, sneezing as Aqua sneezed at the same time. Diodium flew down to the ground and returned to the rat, scampering back up to Aqua’s shoulder.

“Did it work?” He asked hopefully, stretching his neck to watch as Sheik stirred and Link pulled his hand back. Sheik moaned and slowly started to sit up. Link put his arm behind her to steady her.

“What happened?” Sheik moaned as if half-asleep, rubbing her forehead.

“You tell me” Aqua replied, patting Diodium on the head slowly. “I found you unconscious and got the guards before sending someone to get Link.” She told her.

You sent that wolf?!” Link asked Aqua, his voice held a touch of shock in it.

“I have a name!” Diodium barked at him with a lot of attitude in his voice.

“A talking rat?” Sheik asked, raising an eyebrow in confusion.

“Sorry, let me introduce you guys,” Aqua started, realising their confusion. “This is my Daemon, Diodium. He is my basically my soul, well, He is my soul.” She told them “I’ll explain later, but whatever happens to one of us, happens to the other” She warned as she helped Link get Sheik to her feet.

“We’ll take it from here, you’re dismissed” Link said to the guards, and they bowed and left. Both Link and Aqua had one of Sheik’s arms over their shoulders, and Diodium jumped to the ground, transforming back into the young pure black wolf. The four of them started through town and from there up the dirt path leading to the castle.
The group of four came to the gates to the castle, and the guard quickly opened the gate, eyeing the wolf with a glare, but a growl from Diodium made him quickly look away. After supporting Sheik for the walk along the path, they came to the door into the castle. Link opened it, and led the group inside. After walking down a hall and going around a corner, they became swarmed by maids, who took Sheik, leaving Link, Aqua and Diodium alone in the hall.

“So, what did you mean when you said that Diodium is your soul?” Link asked her, eyeing her cautiously.

“I guess I’ve hidden my secret for long enough,” Aqua started “I travel in between worlds, or dimensions. Sort of like when you found Termina, it’s a parallel world to Hyrule, although some of the worlds I’ve been to aren’t as close to Hyrule as Termina. In a journey to another world, my soul was separated, like the inhabitants of that world, and became an animal, known in that world as a Daemon.

“Unlike the adults' Daemons, which can’t change shape, children’s daemons can transform into many different animals, some even picking up the animal species from other areas, like Diodium had when she transformed into that fairy.” She told Link, now patting Diodium’s head.

“Wow.” Was all Link could get out. His face was one of pure shock. “That explains you disappearing for months at a time.”

“Ya, I’ve had to help different groups and people in other worlds.” Aqua told him, shrugging, “It’s not a big deal.” They went on talking about other worlds, Link asking questions and making comments and Aqua answering his questions, for about five minutes until Zelda started walking towards them from down the hall.

“How are you feeling?” Link asked her as she stopped by them

“Fine.” Zelda replied. “Do you guys want to stay here for the night? I’m sure no one would mind.” She asked them

“Sure why not?” Aqua replied in a complete Aussie way. “As long as they don’t mind Diodium.” She added

“I guess” Link answered with a smile and Zelda led the group down the hall towards the guest rooms. She took them to doors that were side-by-side.

“Link, you can have the room on the left and Aqua can have the room on the right, along with Diodium.” Zelda said to them, and they nodded.

“Thanks” Link said to Zelda with a smile as he entered the room Zelda told him he could have.

“Thank you, Your Majesty” Diodium said as he lowered her head as her and Aqua entered their room.
