Chapter 1: Memories

CHAPTER ONE: MEMORIES

“The flow of time is cruel. Its speed seems different for each person, but no one can change it. A thing that doesn’t change with time is a memory of younger days.” – Sheik

Where to start, it’s hard to decide; should I begin at the beginning, middle or end? The ending is not what you may call the end. To me, the end is like the beginning, living the years that I never knew. I was destined to save my land from evil, which I didn’t understand. It’s very hard to explain something that, only now I’m starting to understand. Would it be best for me to continue where the years that I lost came back? Or skip over those wonderful years that went by quickly, and start at the age when I brought peace and prosperity back to my land of Hyrule? Somehow, I have the feeling you know about my adventures and me, so because of that deciding where to start is made easier.

When I turned seventeen (again), I left Koriki Forest and went to the castle to talk to Princess Zelda. Along the way memories filled my mind, some that were happy others that were sad. One memory that will always be with me is that of growing up in the Koriki Forest. Fairies protected the children from nightmares, and other things that scared them, my nightmares were the same every night since I could remember. Who knew that nightmares were a vision about to happen? I have, not had, only one friend there, even though she’s not here now it won’t mean that I will forget how much she cared for me and me her; her name was Saria. Before I left that forest for the first time, I got my fairy, her name is Navi, oh yes Navi. I’m not complaining she did her job, but every once and a while she got annoying. On the bridge that link the forest to Hyrule Field, Saria was waiting and handed me a Fairy Ocarina which I still have today. I will never forget the pain I saw in Saria’s eyes when she seen me leave.

Another memory I won’t forget is that of the Gorons. They were the first strangest race I have seen and its complicated how to describe them. All I could really say it that they’re a race that dines on rocks. When I helped them rid a cave full of dogongos, or giant lizards, I was thanked by a goron hug and I warn you now that those hugs are very painful.

A memory of the Zora’s, a fishlike race, is also still fresh in my mind. One member is such a pain that it’s not hard to remember her. Her name is Princess Ruto. When I found out that she was in a whale her father, King Zora, asked me to save her. I did but all the time she pestered me, she would not let me speak and she treated me as a servant. When I save Lord Jabu-Jabu, the whale’s name, from a bad case of “indigestion” Princess Ruto denied everything. I was on a quest to get the spiritual stone’s to unlock the door of time. The spiritual stone of water or the Zora sapphire; Princess Ruto said that it was an engagement ring and could only give it to the person who will be her husband; of course that wasn’t going to happen.

The last race of people I met was the Gerudo Thieves, these thieves are a tribe of women, no males whatsoever, except every one hundred years and their law is to make that male king; and that king was Ganondorf. The Gerudo are very nice once they get to know you and believe me, it took a while before they could trust me; if I were you I would not make them a foe for the rest of my life, if they see you after that you might get killed.

The last memory that is still with me and is the hardest to talk about is the memory of Princess Zelda and I was in the Temple of Time; and there Ganon imprisoned her in a giant crystal of some kind. I banged on that crystal cage and my heart screamed within me. It seemed to say: ‘No! Not now! Not when I finally found her after all these years!!!’

More memories filled my head as I walk through the market place and to the castle. The guards welcomed me and led me to the courtyard there I saw Zelda where I saw her fourteen years ago, or was it seven?

“Hi Link.” She looks more beautiful now than before.

“Hi, Zelda.”

Since the first time I entered here, I feel more relieved because there was nothing important to be doing. That weight has been lifted from me and now I can just talk and take my time. Zelda and I exchanged memories about when we first met. After I made it passed the guards to the courtyard, she turned around and saw me standing there; she was speechless and all she could say: ‘How did you make it past the guards?’ Then she realized that I was the ‘boy from the forest’ in her dreams and when she saw Navi she replied ‘is that a … fairy?’ Zelda told me more about her visions/dreams and she also pointed to ‘the man from the desert’ who wanted the Triforce. Somehow I had the feeling that Ganon was planning my journey before I began and it also seemed that everything Zelda and I did was laid out ahead of us, before we knew what to do. We sat and talked way into the night.

“I’m sorry to end our conversation Zelda, but I have to leave.”

“You don’t have to Link.” She said as we rose.

“Yes I do. I have a home to go to now.”

“Link, I want you to stay here.”

“I don’t belong here.”

“Yes you do Link. I already had the guards prepare you a room.”

“Zelda I …”

“Link, you have done so much for me in the past. I repaid your kindness by sending you back and living the years that you lost. Let me do more for you. Stay in the castle and …”

“What is it Zelda?” I approached her and put my arms around her. She was silent for a while longer and what she said surprised me.

“Keep me company and protect me from these nightmares that have returned to haunt my sleep.”

She looked up at me, the reflection from the moon shone on her eyes, which make them look violet and was full of tears. I just stood there speechless and for how long, I can’t remember but a voice in the back of my mind recalled something I heard in the past: ‘It is something that grows over time, a true friendship. A feeling in the heart that becomes even stronger of time. The passion of friendship will soon blossom into righteous power and through it; you will know which way to go.’

“Okay. I’ll stay with you.”

“Thank you Link.”

I led her inside the castle and all the way her head was on shoulder and tears were flowing from her eyes. I wish I could do more, but all I can do now is to be here for her. The guards showed me to her room and I laid her on the bed and when was at the door, she looked at me.

“Link, stay here please. Sleep by me tonight and drown out these dreams that scares me.”

I silently closed the door behind me and went to her. “Everything is going to be alright now. Just sleep and I’ll be here when you wake up.”

(“Time passes, people move, like a river flow it never ends. A childish mind will turn to noble ambition; young love will become deep affection. The clear water’s surface reflects growth.” –Sheik)
