Chapter 3: Shadows and Light
The three figures stood side-by-side each without expression. That was, if they could have any expression. Each figure’s skin was darker than night, they had no facial features, and the only possible way to defer one from another was their clothing, which turned out to be the same color as their skin. The figure in the center had a strange little hat on top of its head, a tunic, a pair of boots, and it seemed as if it wore some type of gloves or gauntlets on its hands, unless they were just big. The right figure had a dress and long hair, and the left figure wore a tunic and had hair to its shoulders.
The strange thing about these figures, were the back of their wrists. They had some sort of red light emitting from them. The source of the red light was a flipped triforce symbol. The three figures were chatting in low whispers, but Link was able to hear them. Yet he was not able to tell where they were. The walls, made of rock and stone, rose out of sight, and Link couldn’t even tell if there was a ceiling. Link recognized his surroundings but was not able to “put his finger on it.”
“Well, what are we going to do about the royal family?” The short haired figure asked in a hissing female voice.
“I believe they have started to look for the boy, Sarah.” In a strong male voice, the one with the awkward hat answered.
“I would assume they have no idea where to start, right Shade?”
“I believe so, but I also believe that they will find my counterpart.”
“What of mine?”
“I know this may be a little contradictory for you, but have faith. I have a feeling that she may find both at the same time.”
“She? Don’t tell me, they have sent her to do it.”
“Yes, it makes sense. Who else would be a better candidate to search for my counterpart?”
“Alright, so how do you plan on stopping them? I better not get left out of the fun.”
“Don’t worry, as soon as she finds the boy, we’ll destroy them all at once.”
“No we won’t.” The last figure finally broke her silence, she had a commanding voice that demanded the conversation come to a halt.
“I’m sorry Sabrina, but I fail to comprehend how allowing these children to live will benefit us?” Shade pointed out.
“Don’t you? It’s obvious, we need them to do what we can’t. We need them if we want…” She halted in mid-sentence as if suddenly aware of something… or someone. She turned her featureless head to face Link, and the others followed her gaze, somehow looking curious.
Link looked around, and found that even if he wanted to, there was nowhere to hide himself.
I thought this dream felt real… is it?
Then Link felt something soft brush against his face. A tickling sensation that took Link away from his worries…
----------------------------------------------------------------
Link opened his eyes, which he didn’t remember closing, to find Navi sitting on top of him, nudging her face against his. The bright Summer's daylight filtered through Link's only window.
Stupid cat, I swear I’m never going to leave my window open again.
“Meow!” Navi glared at Link with her jet-black eyes. Her snow-white fur covered her entire body, nose to tail. Navi was an allycat so she wasn’t very well fed. Link was probably the only person that bought her food and cared for her. Yet she didn’t stay at Link’s house, she rarely visited. And when she did, it always turned out to be at the right moment.
Alright! Don’t give me that look! You know I wouldn’t leave you outside.
She just turned around and showed Link her tail.
Don’t be like that Navi. I swear you’re so annoying! Alright, I guess you don’t want the Cat Chow I bought.
At that, she faced Link and started waving her tail. Link just stared at her.
What? You’re obviously not hungry. She pounced, Link reactively caught her in midair. Haha, you were always slow, alright I’ll give ya some Chow. Link reached under his bed and pulled out a small bowl and a bag of “Cat Chow”. After filling the bowl, Link thought, So why are you here this time?
She gave him the same answer she always gave him, “meow meow.” Link began accepting that answer as, “This and that.” The doorbell rang, and Link’s grandpa, Orca, called him to answer it.
Looks like Saria is here, Navi. Ima get dressed so go greet her for me.
“Meooow?” She was annoyed at being given another order, but she always did what Link asked.
That cat is too smart for her own good. Annoyingly smart. It's almost as if she could read my mind... No doubt she's special, a pain in the butt, yet special.
I remember the first time she came, I met Saria, she's been a good friend to me ever since. Too bad the last time Navi came, that terrible hurricane hit us a little early. I hope nothing too terrible happends today. It's like she's like lucky (both good and bad). Whatever, I shouldn't think about it too much. I just need to be careful today.
(A/N: may be a little confusing, read A/N at end of chapter for a small explanation.)
Link got dressed, he decided that he would wear the same thing the day he met Zelda: green shirt, boots, and a pair of jeans. There wasn’t really much that happened on that day, you could easily describe it as “uneventful”. Once Saria talked to her in the following class, they all became good friends. There was one thing bothering Link. Zelda hadn’t told anyone her phone number or where she lived. She always came to visit Saria and Link at their house. Aryll had reminded Link, at the end of that day, about the limousine. Since then Link decided that Zelda wanted to keep her “secret identity” a secret, so he respected her privacy and never questioned her about it. Link reached the door as he finished his last thoughts.
“Young man, is there an adult that we can speak to in this household?” Instead of finding Saria patiently waiting at the door, Link’s eyes met a pair of officers.
Link nodded to answer their question. I wonder what’s going on. His grandpa was already in the hallway, and he began to talk to the authorities as Link went off to search for Navi. Something is wrong. Where are you Navi? Link found her in front of his sister’s room. What does Aryll have to do with those cops?
“Meeeeeeeeoooooooow.” Navi nudged her head against the door to open it. When Link entered he found the room empty.
So, where’s Aryll? As Link was thinking his cellphone vibrated. He checked his inbox to find about 20 messages from both Saria and Zelda. They all read, “THIS IS IMPORTANT, BUT YOU NEED TO STAY CALM”. After opening one of the strange messages from Saria, Link read:
Link, I know this may come as a shock to you, so I need you to clear your head and think rationally as you read the following. Please don’t do anything crazy, ok? Your sister was kidnapped. I think they were after Zelda, but they were only able to get a hold of Aryll. I would tell you more, but we want to talk to you first. Come over Zelda’s house, here are the directions:
Head down…
Link memorized the directions and snuck out his window. He knew now why the cops were here. He only hoped Orca wouldn’t worry.
Are you coming? Link thought, half-way through the window.
Navi tilted her head to the side and gave him a confused look. Link just continued through the window, quiet as a shadow. When he dropped on the other side, Navi followed.
author's note: Thanks Achitka for that bit of advice. I could still use a little advice on writing a fight scene from anyone willing to help out.
Navi: If you weren't able to catch it from what you read, Navi is very speacial. Not only can she understand Link, but she has special meaning to him. When she comes over, which is rarely, something great (terrible or wonderful, but great) happens to Link that day (such as finding out his sister was kidnapped).
Sorry Achitka, my typo was off a whole paragraph! Really big thank you! cya
