Chapter 3: Our Hylian hero

It was a beautiful day in Kakariko village. The sun was shining, the birds were singing, it was a perfect day! A young boy, only 12 years old, was taking a stroll through the town. He was wearing a green tunic, brown boots and had a green hat and had blonde hair and blue eyes. His name was Link.

But, the strangest thing about him was that he was a Kokiri, not a Hylian. The Great Deku Tree had forbid all the Kokiri from leaving the forest, just south of Kakariko. But, he knew that it was alright. Either that or he was different from all his friends.

He knew that he was a bit different, because he had no guardian fairy, like they had. This was a bit annoying sometimes, especially concerning Mido, the greatest bully of Kokiri forest! But, maybe that was just natural. After all, he was only 12 years old while almost all of the others were probably much, much older!

That was the strangest thing about Kokiri; they looked just like Hylian children but could keep on living for a VERY long time. The only one that was younger than him was little Fado, who was only 9, but even he had a fairy! But his favourite friend was Saria. He sometimes went to the temple to meet her but, being the great forest sage, she couldn’t leave that place (unless she spoke to the other sages in the Chamber of Sages, but Link didn’t know that) But, she was reaching the end of her lifetime, very soon, and the next sage was yet to be decided.

But, anyway, Link was taking a stroll in Kakariko. Suddenly, he saw smoke rising from Hyrule market. “Looks like a fire broke out. Looks like there’s another thing to tell Saria!” He loved telling Saria all sorts of news of the world outside of the forest, whether it was something insignificant, like a cucco that was loose, or something really great, like this fire.

But, when he got there, he saw the ruin. A recent rain had put down the fires but it was still horrible. Scorched corpses everywhere, all the buildings ruined...it was absolutely horrifying! Link saw that the Happy Mask Shop was in the worst state. Like it had been shattered! And too bad, Link really liked that place. He was used to borrow a different mask and sneak up on Saria and try to scare her. But it never worked, she just laughed, no matter how scary the mask was.

He approached the ruined shop and heared a grunt, coming from it. He moved some of the wood aside and saw the owner, just barely alive. “Uhh.....y-you? You’re a Hylian, a-aren’t you? But then, *cough cough!* why are you w-wearing Kokiri clothes?”

Hylian? Link? But, he thought he was.....maybe.....he had always been different. Could it be? “Why do you think I’m a Hylian?”

“You, y-you’re just like a certain p-person, my ancestor knew. Th-that person vanquished a g-great, that is now loose.....You *cough cough COUGH!*” This time, he coughed up blood and was shaking after it “You...you must, take...mask...Fierce Deity...beware, i-its power, it’s terrifying! O-only use it *cough cough!* when you are...forced...to do so...” Then he dropped down, dead.

“Hey...HEY! How am I supposed to know which mask it is!? I don’t know this ‘Fierce Deities Mask’anyway!” It was no use. He only had one choice; to look for a mask he hadn’t seen before. He then saw a whole stack of masks, each one, shattered. All, except one. Link looked at it. It was like a real face. With silver hair, white eyes and strange markings all over it. But, the hair, except for its silvery colour, was exactly like Links hair...or at least the front of his hair...He also found an extreme temptation to put it on, but, he fought the urge. He knew it, this was definitely the mask!

“Great Deku Tree!” Link had gone back to the forest and looked at the Great Deku Tree, furiously. “Tell me, am I really a Kokiri? I want to know!”

“Young Link. Have you gone outside the forest again?”

“TELL ME!”

“Sigh, very well then. No, you are not a Kokiri. You are a Hylian.” Link thought of his whole life. He always went outside the forest, even if the Great Deku Tree said that he would die if he did it, he never had a guardian fairy, Mido always hated him.....It all made sense now.....

“But, why. Why was I raised here, not with the other Hylians? WHY DIDN’T I EVEN MEET MY PARENTS!?”

“Your parents, they died, when you were only a child. And you had no other relatives. So the king, knowing your bloodline, decided to ask the sages. Ruto sensed something, coming from you. So did Nabooru and Impa. Rauru, one of the very first sages, knew of your bloodline and even the look on your face. The same went for your friend, Saria. And Darunia, aware of his and your ancestors, thought that you should get a good home, where somebody would love and take care of you. Finally, they decided on letting you live here, just like your famous ancestor, the Hero of Time!”

Link was astounded. “M-my ancestor.....The Hero of Time?”

“Yes, the very same one.”

“I-I had no idea.....”

“Which is exactly why I told you.”

“I.....I’m sorry, Great Deku Tree. I didn’t know that. I’m so sorry I was always so disobedient...always going out of the forest and fighting with Mido...I’m sorry...” He was starting to get tears in his eyes.

“It’s alright Link, I forgive you. But, one thing that I’ve been wondering since you came back, What are you carrying with you?” Link stiffened up. The Great Deku Tree felt the powerful aura of the Fierce Deities Mask. The Happy Mask salesman did tell him the mask was dangerous...

“Oh, you mean this?” He took up the mask. “This is just a mask, a plaything. Nothing more than that!”

“Stop fooling around Link.” The Great Deku Tree was getting much more serious now “I can feel an enormous amount of power coming from it. Tell me, Link, what it is.”

“I-it’s...It’s the Fierce Deities Mask.” He closed his eyes and was expecting the Great Deku Tree to punish him any moment. But it didn’t. He then looked at the Great Deku Tree and saw that it didn’t do anything. “Is there something wrong?”

“That mask...I feel a great evil coming from it.....Where did you get it?”

“From the Happy Mask salesman.”

“That fellow? Saria says that you talk about him all the time! I suppose I can trust him...I hope...”

Comments on this chapter

Koroks Rock says:

You need to tweak it a bit more. Play around and see if you can make your wording flow better, try and make the great Deku Tree sound more like himself. The Mask Salesman's lines in particular need some refinement.

ZELDAFAN!n_n says:

Sorry, I'll try to fix that in the next chapter...If there are any such persons. But, you must remember that this is a different Tree from the one in Ocarina of time, so he might have a different personality.
