Community News: Happy Fi Day!; New Website Theme to Celebrate!

Posted by on November 29, 2011

Remember how I said that an obnoxious but important character would be taking over today? I know it’s an hour early but…

HAPPY FI DAY!

Let’s celebrate by stating the obvious, over analyzing everything, and being as unhelpful as possible with the intention of aiding someone!

I made a new theme for her as well.

I wonder why some people assumed it would be Groose…?

I guess this needs some explanation…

Fi wasn’t always Fi. Her name was originally Phi. Those taking calculus would immediately recognize it name as the “Golden Ratio”, or φ.

As stated by the highly trustworthy wikipedia: two quantities are in the golden ratio if the ratio of the sum of the quantities to the larger quantity is equal to the ratio of the larger quantity to the smaller one. It has one positive solution using irrational figures which just happens to be 1.6180339887….

Essentially, it’s used a lot in art, especially Renaissance architecture.

And how does this relate to the most useless Zelda side-kick ever, Fi? The Golden Ratio was taken from Phidas, a Greek artist who utilized it in his work. He became so well known for his work that he was said to have been “Created by Athena herself” and was considered the ultimate source of knowledge sent directly from the gods. He set the basis for how the Greek gods would be painted and it is still used in modern times.

Sound familiar? In September, though, Nintendo of America changed her name to Fi to reflect upon the musical scale but to still keep the same pronunciation and meaning intact.

And how does this relate to the 30th of November? Not a huge reason but…

Last year, my mathematics teacher declared November 30th Phi day so we could remember that we had an exam on the subject. No exam for me this year but he’s kept the tradition going for eight years and I thought it would be fun to relate it to Zelda somehow.

Anyway, happy Fi day and cheers to the worst side-kick Link’s ever had!

Now time to go and argue sword theories...

Nope, the only name given to her in the game is Fi (I just searched the entire text dump for any clues but couldn't find any). This was also confirmed by Zelda (or the Goddess, however you interpret it) when she told Link that she created her to guide him. I can't think of any reason Fi would give Link a nickname to address her with being the way she is...

You might be thinking of Zorina, the name fans on ZI gave her before Nintendo confirmed it to be Phi (and then changed it to Fi). She's also been called Steve on the ZU forums (where Ghirahim was called Debbie) after the first trailer back in '10. I really think Steve suits her more than Fi ^^'

But no. Unfortunately, her name is Fi. >.<

i am very positive she mentions her full name about half way through the game...
