Guides/FAQs

Five years in the waiting, this was one of the most anticipated games of all time. Released in November 1998 to an eager public, it broke new ground, with Z-targeting and awesome graphics. "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" made the jump to 3D, and promised to fill in the missing details about the Imprisoning War. Zelda 64, as it is sometimes called, is the first game in the series' internal order.

The instruction booklet clarifies the creation of Hyrule, telling the story of how three golden goddesses created the world and left the Triforce as a symbol of their power. Where the Triforce stood became sacred land. Many years later, in the deep forest of Hyrule, the Great Deku Tree served as a guardian to the forest children, the Kokiri. Each Kokiri had a guardian fairy, except for one: Link. Link, a young Hylian lad brought up among the Kokiri, had recently been having a nightmare: he'd be standing in front of a castle, when a rider on horseback, carrying a girl, would ride by. Another rider, clad in black, would appear and look at him menacingly. Then Link would awaken.

Link awoke from this nightmare to see a fairy named Navi hovering in front of him. She had been sent to summon Link to the Great Deku Tree. The guardian of the Kokiri told Link that he had been cursed by an evil man from the desert, and told Link to enter and break the curse. Link did so, but the Deku Tree had been doomed before Link even started. Before dying, the Great Deku Tree gave Link the Spiritual Stone of the Forest, and directed him to Hyrule Castle to meet the Princess of Destiny.

Link conspires with Zelda to find three Spiritual Stones and open the gate to the Sacred Realm, to keep Ganondorf from getting the Triforce. However, when Link tries to open the gate by claiming the Master Sword, his spirit is sealed for seven years, until he is old enough to become the Hero of Time. Meanwhile, Ganondorf invades the Sacred Realm and takes the Triforce of Power. When Link wakes up in the future, he must wield the legendary Master Sword to awaken five Sages. Link's quest is to end Ganondorf's reign as the King of Evil and seal him in the void of the Evil Realm.
