Link Battles Through the Face Shrines

Heading now to the shrine north of Animal Village, Link found a valley filled with ancient pillars and Armos Knights, statues that came to life when touched. The owl flew in and landed nearby, and told Link that there were two shrines, one to the north and one to the south. He directed Link toward the south shrine, where he would learn much from ancient ruins that spoke of the Wind Fish. Link descended a staircase into the valley, and made his way carefully through the multitude of Armos statues, careful not to touch any when he didn't need to push them out of his path.

When he finally reached the entrance to the southern Face Shrine, Link stepped cautiously into the dark, musty interior. He could tell that no one had been here for ages. Link was in a battle to the death sooner than he expected; he faced a huge Armos Knight Armos Knight after walking through the first door he came to. Link was glad he had bought the bow, for the Armos Knight was vulnerable to arrows. The overgrown statue tried to rush Link, but Link shot arrows until the Armos Knight turned a bright red. Then it tried to jump up and crush Link, but Link kept shooting arrows at it. But then the monster did something entirely unexpected: its mask fell off, exposing the crazed face of the monster underneath. Link kept shooting arrows until the statue was destroyed, and a door opened on the other side of the room. Picking up the Face Key the Armos Knight left behind, Link entered the door into a dark room.

In this room was a picture carved on the far wall, but it was too dark to see it. Link lit some nearby torches with some Magic Powder and went back to take a look at the picture. Link was surprised to see the owl carved into the picture, as well as a strange whale with many insignia on it. Could this be a picture of the Wind Fish? A message was cut into the rock in an ancient script, and read as follows:

TO THE FINDER...
THE ISLE OF KOHOLINT, IS BUT AN ILLUSION...
HUMAN, MONSTER, SEA, SKY... A SCENE ON THE LID OF A SLEEPER'S EYE... AWAKE THE DREAMER, AND KOHOLINT WILL VANISH MUCH LIKE A BUBBLE ON A NEEDLE... CAST-AWAY, YOU SHOULD KNOW THE TRUTH!

Link was disturbed and confused. Could this ancient inscription be talking to him? How could Koholint just be an illusion? Was everything he had done, everything he had seen, just a dream of the Wind Fish? Link stumbled outside, not sure if anything he was seeing was real. Just then, the owl landed nearby and told Link,

I see you have read the relief. While it does say the island is but a dream of the Wind Fish, no one is really sure. Just as you cannot know if a chest holds treasure until you open it, so you cannot tell if this is a dream until you awaken. The only one who knows for sure is the Wind Fish. Trust your feelings... Someday you will know for sure...

Link headed north, looking for the northern Face Shrine, and saw two Armos Knights on a small island. Swimming out, he touched one and watched as it jumped into the water after him. It sank to Wizzrobe the bottom, leaving behind a secret passageway which led to the Face Keyhole. Link put the Face Key into the hole, and the entrance to the Face Shrine appeared. Inside, Wizzrobes faded in and out of sight, blasting Link with magical beams, but Link dispatched them with bombs. An owl statue told Link to enter the space where the eyes had walls. Looking at a map he had found, Link noticed that the Face Shrine had been built in the shape of a face, and that there didn't appear to be an entrance into either of the eyes. But Link bombed a hole in a wall and entered the left eye of the Shrine, finding the entrance to a dark underground tunnel infested with huge sparks. Exiting the tunnel, Link found a more powerful Bracelet. He almost felt strong enough to lift a whale now!

Link could now lift elephant statues that were too heavy before, and was able to reach new areas of the Face Shrine. He bombed a wall to get into the Face Shrine's right eye, and met a huge manta ray, Smasher, inside. Smasher picked up a big crystal sphere and threw it at Link, and Link dodged it just in time. Picking up the crystal ball himself, Link threw it at Smasher. The ray wasn't as good at dodging as Link was, and was hit. Smasher and Link took turns trying to hit each other with the crystal ball, until Smasher was finally defeated. Link went up a few rooms, but found that, through enchantment, he was going through the same few rooms over and over again. Picking up an elephant statue, Link found a secret passage and escaped from the endless loop of rooms.

Climbing out of the spike-filled passage, Link saw three Pols Voices jumping towards him. Their large ears looked vulnerable to shrill noises, so Link played the Ballad of the Wind Fish on his Ocarina. The Pol's Voices exploded, unable to take the noise. Later, Link found himself in a room with two Dodongo Snakes and fed them bombs until they exploded.

At last Link found the lair of the sixth Nightmare, but there didn't appear to be anything there. But the whole room was an illusion, and the face of the Nightmare, Facade, appeared on the floor. Facade couldn't hurt Link himself, so he made various objects in the room do it for him. Tiles rose up from the floor and rushed at Link using his shield Link, and even pots attacked him. Link hid behind his shield until all the tiles and pots in the room had destroyed themselves, and then he was ready to fight Facade. But holes began to materialize and vanish all over the room, so Link had to step carefully. Stepping onto Facade's face, Link put down several bombs and detonated them. Facade couldn't move his face to dodge the bombs, and so couldn't put up much of a resistance. In his dying breath he warned Link that if the Wind Fish woke up, everything on the island would be gone forever. In the next room Link picked up the Coral Triangle, and as he warped outside a voice told him that something was calling from the mountains...

As Link swam away from the Face Shrine, the owl flew overhead and landed on a nearby cliff. Calling to Link, he said,

Hoot! The many monsters of this island fear that the Wind Fish is about to awaken! The monsters' power is real! They may conquer the island and destroy their foes! That day may come soon! Now, go to the mountain tower! Fly like a bird! Hoot! Hoot!
