Looking for clues in Kakariko

From this moment on you are free to roam around Hyrule, but there are many obstacles Link cannot yet pass by and so it would be best to travel to the place marked on the map. The path to the east leads past the graveyard, over the bridge and to the Hag's Potion shop. You don't have any bottles at the moment so buying any drinks here is pointless. Going west however brings you to this sign post.

The sign to the north of Kakariko

Here at the sign you can visit a fortune teller who will give you a hint for the cost of 20 Rupees. Currently, you do not really need a hint, but later on in the game a Fortune Teller may be able to give you a clue if you get stuck somewhere. Besides in exchange for the money he heals all your hearts as well.

Upon arriving in the village there are many things you can do right now. For starters notice that many of the Kakarikian(?) people are afraid of you. After reading one of the sign posts you no longer need to wonder why. Everybody thinks you're the bad guy. There are even villagers which will call out some soldier on sight, so beware!

Uh-oh Link's in trouble now!

There are many treasures in Kakariko so if you have some time left, be sure to check out the "Missing Links" section below. Go into the home to the east of Blind's place to (the one marked with a cross on the map) and talk to the resident to learn some things about Hyrule's past. This person doesn't know the whereabouts of the elder and suggests you talk to the other villagers instead.

Talk to the blue haired boy near the cuccos and it turns out that he is the grandson of the elder. The lad reveals that the old man is hiding near the Eastern Palace and so marks that location on your map. That's where we need to be going; east.

Learning the whereabouts

Now that our business has concluded here Link can leave the town as there is nothing else to be done around here. The smithy's shop to the east is of no use to you at this current moment.

Finding the hideout in the east

You can either travel via the northern or southern route as both branches will lead you to the Eastern Palace. You know you're getting close when you're a landscape with arcs and large statues of stone. Continue on until you come across a small yellow roofed structure. The cross on the map points to this location and so you should enter it.

Sahasrahla the wise guy

Inside is Sahasrahla the village Elder of Kakariko. He explains to Link that he should acquire the Pendant of Courage before he will reveal the entire story. So head to the east and work your way towards the Eastern Palace. Mind you that some of the statues around here come to live when you get near them. These enemies are Armos and unlike their NES predecessors these guys can easily be killed by a few hits with your sword. You know you're on the right track if you come across one as the entrance is heavily guarded.

Missing Links

This is the Missing Links section where most of the optional things will be covered such as finding all the items/heart pieces and other interesting stuff. First we start in Kakariko with that strange hole to the far west.

Entering the cave from a ledge

If you drop down into it from the ledge above it Link finds a hoard with many goodies down below. The chests contain: some Bombs (3 to be exact) and 3 chests with a Red Rupee (60 Rupees in total). Also notice the darkened wall to the left. Hmmm... what can we do with it now that we have collected some bombs.

Look! A secret passage!

Piece of Heart (1/24)
The secret wall in the Kakarikian cave
After bombing the back wall in this little cavern. It opens up the super secret back room which has two Blue Rupees & hearts hidden beneath the pots and at the end your very first Piece of Heart inside the chest.

PoH 1/24

Blind's Hideout

The home with the flat green roof also contains some goodies. Enter it to hear a guy's story about a thief called: "Blind". It turns out to be that this wicked thief hated light more than anything. How interesting...
Downstairs there are four chests with a Red Rupees each. Take caution however that once you open one of these chests the others will mysteriously open if you leave the room. Hence you must collect all their values right now. One way to get to all the chests is by pushing the blocks as shown in the picture below:

A solution to getting all 4 Red Rupees from their chests

Piece of Heart (2/24)
Blind's secret treasure
Bomb the back wall in this room too in order to collect your second Piece of Heart along with 6 Blue Rupees hidden beneath the pots. Only two more pieces to go, until your health goes up!

PoH 2/24

Empty Bottle (1/4)
On sale for 100 Rupees
Now that Link has collected quite a lot of money he can buy himself an Empty Bottle from the merchant sitting on the tapestry for 100 Rupees. You'd better take this offer as bottles (especially their contents) can become very valuable later on in the game!

Bottle 1/4

Empty Bottle (2/4)
The backdoor of the Tavern
Just when you have collected the first bottle a second one is available too! You probably noticed the little tavern in the south east corner of Kakariko. Inside you can see a chest behind the counter, but you can't seem to reach it... Just enter the place via the rear entrance and the bottle is yours! Also there is a Cucco playing hide-n-seek beneath one of the pots.

Bottle 1/4

Bug Catching Net
Visit the friendly, ill, bug-catching boy
Talk to the sick boy in one of the smaller central homes and he tells you that because of his illness he cannot go out to catch bugs. And so the young chap decides to give you his Bug Catching Net for as long as he's sick. Make well use of this item. You can catch Fairies and Wasps with it and keep them in your bottle for later.

You got the net

The Old Lady's Home

There is a house with several Cuccos roaming on the loose. If you bomb the center section of the right wall here you can find a chest with a bundle of 10 Arrows in it. Some treasure compared to all the other stuff hidden in town...

Shack of infinite supplies

Another interesting thing to point out here is the little shack in the bottom left corner of Kakariko. If you place a bomb in front of the center section you gain entrance to a little hoard. It contains:
  • 4 Bombs
  • 5 Arrows (as one bundle)
  • 2 rats (can drop a Red Rupee)
This may not seem like a lot, but you can get an infinite supply from these pots meaning that you never need to buy any bombs or arrows again. Unfortunately, Link can only carry 10 Bombs and 30 Arrows at the moment.

Open sesame...

Kakariko Casino

Leave Kakariko via the southern exit go past the Library as there are currently no books worth reading. The other home to the right is a gambling hall. Here you can pick the contents of a chest for 20 Rupees. The prizes are 1, 20, 50 Rupees. If you do the math on this you'll come to the conclusion that the odds of this game are in your favor so play it if you like.
Piece of Heart (3/24)
A race with a secret
Race area mapWalk into the home on the left to find a lonely guy. He tells you that he sealed the door to his younger brother's place. Bomb the cracked wall to undo free the lad from his solitude. Exit the home via the left entrance to find yourself at the start of a racing area.

Many people think you need the Pegasus Boots to clear this field within the set 15 second time limit, but there's a trick which can earn you this Heart Piece without any effort at all. Just follow the lower path and press down on D-pad at two pebbles as shown below to jump over the fence. This gets you the Piece of Heart in little more than 08 seconds without having to rush! wink.gif

PoH 3/24

South East Hyrule

Go east from the racing field or south from Link's home to find even more interesting items around this swampy area.
Piece of Heart (4/24)
Drain the pond with the Watergate Switch
From Link's home go south as much as possible and then west one screen. Here you'll find a strange structure which looks like the picture below. This is the watergate building.

The Watergate

Inside move the left and right blocks up and the center one horizontally to gain some Bombs from the Chest. Exit and reenter, now move the center block upwards, and either one of the other sideways. Walk up and carefully pull the right switch while avoiding the Anti Faerie (the left lever is a dud and causes 6 bombs to drop!). Go outside again to notice that the water resided. Pick up the Heart Piece which is now reachable to you.

PoH 4/24

Faerie Pond (1/14)
The big Fairy of the swamp
To the northwest of the Watergate there is a weakened wall section. Pull out a bomb and enter the cave after clearing it to meet a faerie who will heal you completely.

Open sesame... on to the big Faerie

Mini Moldorm Cavern

First you need to fill your 2 bottles with bees. These can be found most frequently behind the Kakariko Casino resident due south of the actual town. Catch them with the Bug Catching net.

Catching Bugs & Getting 380 Rupees

Then bomb the wall to the east of the Water gate shown on the picture below. Enter it and kill the Mini Moldorm on the center platform. Next release a bee from the bottle and have him kill the other Moldorms. If successful the doorway will open up.

Bomb this wall Fighting Moldorms with Bees

In the back room there's a dude who will give you 300 Rupees just for talking to him. Furthermore the 2 other chests in the back contain Red Rupees as well (the other two have Bombs and Arrows in them). Make sure that you don't cross the 999 Rupee limit or else your treasure goes lost! This treasure may come in handy later on in the game when you need to buy Zora Flippers or at the Pond of Happiness.

You got some money there...

Ice Rod
A cold cavern in the SE corner of Hyrule
Go the most southeastern point on the map (i.e. go east from the Mini Moldorm cavern mentioned above. Then go north and bomb the weakened wall at the dead end. Inside the cave is a lonely chest with the freezing rod in it.

You got the frosty wand

Faerie Pond (2/14)
A nearly frozen pond near the Ice Rod
If you wish to have an easier life during the quest of the completing the Eastern Palace this faerie pond may come in handy. Faerie Ponds are little squares of water where four Faeries roam about. You can either touch them to heal for 7 Hearts or catch them with the Bug Catching Net to bottle them. You should have two bottles at the moment so you might as well make use of them now.

To find this pond enter the cavern to the right of the Ice Rod's entrance. Go up and destroy the wall section with a bomb. That's all.

The ice pond

The Lost Woods

Link doesn't need to be going here for quite a while, but now that we're completing optional tasks here's what he can do in the woods:
Piece of Heart (5/24)
Thieves' hideout in the Lost Woods
From the Northern exit of Kakariko go past the fortune teller's place and up into the entrance of the forest. Go left a the first branch, avoid the thief (he steals you money and items) and head north again to find 9 grass patches in a square.

The 9 bushes near the hideout

Take out the center patch and fall down the gap to find this heart piece lying on the upper ledge of this room.

PoH 5/24

Pull 4 Blue Rupees from objects (1)
It's a kind a magic...
If you pull the tree next to the thieves' hideout (see previous Piece of Heart) 4 Blue Rupees mysteriously pop up... Must have been a secret hoard.

The first tree ever to grow money!

Magic Mushroom
The dancing fungus of the Lost Woods
From the previous Heart Piece travel to the west as far as possible and you'll notice a little mushroom which is dancing all about. Pick him up to collect this item... Question is what is it good for..?

locating the fungus

Pull 4 Blue Rupees from objects (2)
The tree to the south of the Lumberjacks
Similar to the previous tree pulling the tree as shown on this picture will result in 4 Blue Rupees appearing from nowhere. Another secret stash I guess.

Another money tree! Where can I buy those?

Lost Woods Casino - Double or nothing!

At the most northwestern point of the forest there is a hollow wooden log leading up. Enter it to find a second gambling hall. Talk to the thief and for 100 Rupees you can play another pick the contents 1 out 3 chest gambling game. This time the stakes are much higher and so you can win anything between 1 or 300 Rupees. Feeling lucky?

Oh my gosh, I won 300 Rupees. Yay!

Pull 4 Blue Rupees from objects (3)
In Hyrule Castle's Courtyard
Like the other two the right tree inside Hyrule Castle's walls can be pulled to obtain another 20 Rupees as in 4 Blue Rupees. Perhaps that's how the king can compensate for shortcomings on the annual funds.

The King has a money tree too?!?

Magic Powder
Fungus witchcraft by the Potion shop hag
Go to the east from the Lost Woods and/or Sanctuary to reach the Potion Shop. Outside that old brewing hag smells the scent of the fungus and seems to be very interested in it. Give her the fungus, exit the screen, return, and enter the shop itself. Next to the saleswoman there is a little bag.

Obtain the power of magic

Pick it up and from now on you can sprinkle magic dust on objects or your enemies. Try it for instance on the Buzzblobs outside. They turn into funny looking Cukemans which even speak to you (careful, they still damage you on contact). Furthermore if you sprinkle the powder on an Anti Fairy it will turn into a real Fairy! This can come in handy for in the Eastern Palace.

Funny but still deadly!

Eastern Palace

Just before going to the next chapter here's another Faerie Pond to be found in this area:

Sahasrahla's Stash

In the Elder's hiding place you might have noticed the weakened wall. Break it open with a bomb and take Sahasrahla's pocket money which is 2x 50 Rupees and 3 Bombs.

The Wise man's pocket money

Faerie Pond (3/14)
Due south of the Eastern Palace
You should have two bottles and a net at the moment so you might as well make use of them now.

The location

To find this pond enter the main perimeter of the Eastern Palace (with the green arcs) and head east, until you can go no farther. Then follow the southern path to reach a dead end as shown above. There are some poles around here, but you can't do anything with them right now.

The pond

There, that's it for now. Yes, I know it's possible to get another Piece of Heart / Faerie Pond in the desert, but it is of no use at the moment as we cannot form another Heart Container. Besides Link will go there in the future, so walking around Hyrule for just that to return later is a bit silly... Granted the Lost Woods weren't necessary, but with the Magic Pouch the upcoming dungeon will be breeze.
