While heading south across Ukuku Prairie for Martha's Bay, Link suddenly noticed that he was being haunted. A translucent, disembodied spirit was following him around, making wailing noises every once in a while. Link wasn't afraid of it - he had faced much worse things - so, turning around and looking it right in the eye, he asked what it wanted from him. The ghost had trouble making its will known, but eventually was able to tell Link to take him to the house by the bay.
The house by the bay had apparently been completely abandoned for years. Inside it was dark and dusty, the floor was weak and cracked in places, and the furniture was falling apart. But the ghost looked around its former house and declared that it was unchanged. Saddened by an attack of nostalgia, the ghost asked Link to take him to his grave in the cemetery. Link complied with his request, and headed north for the cemetery. None of the graves in the cemetery belonged to the ghost, however, and Link had a hard time fighting evil spirits and undead zombies. He finally spotted a lone grave on top of a hill, and took the ghost there. At last his spirit was at rest, and he thanked Link, telling him to look inside a jar in his home. The ghost disappeared into his grave and Link was about to leave, but the owl flew in and landed on a nearby branch.
- Hoot! It has been some time since our paths crossed, lad. You must dive into the waters of
Martha's Bay to enter the Catfish's Maw... The closer you get to the Wind Fish, the more
restless he sleeps. Carry onward! Hoot!
The jar in the house by the bay contained little more than a Secret Seashell, which Link pocketed deftly. More importantly, Link knew where to look for the next Instrument of the Sirens, and dove into the cold water of Martha's Bay. In the middle of the bay Link could see some high, inaccessible rocks, and closer he saw a mermaid swimming in the water. He swam to her and struck up a conversation, and she told him that the waves had taken a very important necklace from around her neck. If Link could find this necklace, she would let him take a scale from her tail. Link searched all around the bay but couldn't find the necklace. He even looked under a bridge, but he only found a grizzled old fisherman who was missing a fishing hook. Link gave up the search until later, and moved on.
The high rocks in the middle of Martha's Bay looked suspicious, so he checked them out. There didn't appear to be a way in until Link swam underwater and saw a little tunnel in the rock near the bottom of the lake. Link swam through the tunnel, and when he resurfaced he was inside the ring of rocks. In front of him lay the the gigantic head of a catfish, carved out of stone. Its mouth was open, and Link guessed that through the catfish's mouth and into its belly lay the next dark dungeon...
Before long Link was confronted by a huge, undead Stalfos Knight. It carried a shield, but Link
hit it from its unguarded side and watched it collapse to the floor.
Placing a bomb next to the pile of bones, Link backed up and watched the explosion damage the
Stalfos before it could come back together. After more bombs had exploded in its face, the Stalfos
moaned in frustration that it couldn't beat Link, and escaped.
In the next room, Link found a treasure chest, but there was only a note inside. It read, "I've got what was inside this box. Come and get it, if you can! -Master Stalfos." Link chased the Stalfos around the Catfish's Maw, defeating it each time. Before the fourth and final fight began, Master Stalfos admitted that he couldn't outlast Link, but resolved to fight him anyway. Link destroyed him, and the oversized skeleton left behind the Hook Shot, a treasure that would allow Link to reach previously unreachable locations.
With the Hook Shot Link could cross huge gaps in the floor, and was able to reach the lair of the fifth Nightmare, the Slime Eel. Eying the outsider who had come to wake the Wind Fish, the monster said in his slippery voice that he would eat Link. An eel head burst holes in the wall in four places in the cave, and out of a gaping hole in the middle of the lair came a spiked tail. The tail swung wildly around the room and heads popped out of the holes, trying to eat Link, but Link used the Hook Shot to fish the heads out. Sometimes a whole Moldorm-like eel popped out, squirmed around, and exploded, but sometimes Link got lucky and pulled out the head and neck of the true Nightmare. After a long battle, the eel's neck had been sliced one too many times, and in his dying breath he called Link a fool, saying that he didn't seem to know what kind of island this was. These words troubled Link, but he picked up the fifth Instrument, the Wind Marimba, and listened to a voice tell him to see an island secret in the shrine...
