Heading west across the mountains, Link started to hear a cry for help in the distance. Worried, Link hurried towards the sound, and found Marin trapped atop a partially demolished bridge. She told Link that some monsters had put her up there, and that she was afraid of heights. Carefully lining up a shot, Link fired the Hook Shot at a rock on the other side of the bridge. As he traveled to the other end of the bridge, Link scooped up Marin in his arms and carried her with him.
Surprised at her sudden rescue, Marin thanked Link from the bottom of her heart. She started to tell Link something, but her embarrassment kept her from saying it. Before she could tell Link what was on her mind, Tarin's booming yell reached them from a lower cliff. He was searching for Marin by screaming her name, and at last he had found her. Marin said never mind, and left to meet her father. As Link prepared to leave, the owl landed nearby and told him,
- Hoot! That girl sang her song in front of the Egg! Her "Ballad of the Wind Fish" is a
song of awakening! Did she actually intend to wake the Wind Fish?! The next Sirens' Instrument
is in the west. Play your melodies so the unliving stones might hear! Show your courage! The
Wind Fish waits for you! Hoot!
Link continued west and came to a place where huge boulders rained down. Jumping off a cliff, he found himself in a valley of stones. The cliff's face had a weak spot, which Link bombed, and inside the exposed cave Link found a face embedded into the wall. As Link drew near, it spit out a stream of fire, guarding the rest of the cave from intruders. However, Link put the Mirror Shield in front of him, and the flames were pushed off to the side.
Outside the cave Link found an odd rock formation. A carved turtle's head, and its front feet, rested in the side of a cliff. The owl had told Link to bring unliving stones to life, so he played the Frog's Song of Soul. The turtle's head shook, and the rock covering it fell off in pieces, exposing the green head underneath. The turtle stuck its long neck out of the cave and waved its head back and forth, threatening Link. The head lunged towards Link a few times during the ensuing battle, but the monster proved no match for Link's sword. With the turtle's head defeated, Link entered the cave through which the neck had protruded, into Turtle Rock.
Rivers of boiling lava flowed throughout Turtle Rock, and the cavern was patrolled by Ropes, snake-like monsters that attack on sight. Flying devils called Vires flew above Link's head, throwing fireballs and charging him. When Link defeated a Vire, it would split into two white Keeses, bats that immediately charged Link before flying away. Link encountered many strong enemies in this dungeon, including a blue Hinox; Rolling Bones, the monster from the first dungeon; and Smasher, the ray who wanted to play catch with a crystal ball.
An owl statue told Link to attack certain monsters from a higher place. Link could see why a bit later. Getting on top of a ledge, Link threw bombs down to feed some Dodongo Snakes. When they were defeated, a treasure chest appeared next to him, instead of down where the Dodongo Snakes had been slithering. Later, Link fought Blaino, a boxing monster that threw wild punches at Link. Link dodged the punches and hit him on his unguarded side, not an easy feat. Blaino had been guarding the Magic Rod, and now that Link had it, he could burn things. This was indeed a powerful weapon, for its magical energy never ran out.
With the Magic Rod Link could melt solid blocks of ice, and after going through an ice-filled cavern he fought Cue Ball, the octopus monster from the Angler's Tunnel. Later Link melted the ice in a different passageway, and faced the wrath of the Nightmare, Hot Head. This denizen of the lava, covered in flame, jumped in and out of the molten rock, promising to never let Link play the Instruments of the Sirens. Link found that he could only hurt Hot Head by hitting him with balls of fire from the Magic Rod, and before long Hot Head's wall of flame fell off, leaving the crazed face of the monster behind. Link hit the Nightmare a few more times with the Magic Rod, and before Hot Head was defeated he told Link that he could not wake the Wind Fish, because he too was in the dream. In the next room Link picked up the Thunder Drum, and as he warped outside the mysterious voice told him that the Egg on the mountain was calling.
