Link continued exploring Death Mountain, looking for a way into the tower. While exploring the inside of Spectacle Rock, a rock formation that looked like eyeglasses, he received a telepathic message from Sahasrahla: "You must somehow make your way to the top of Spectacle Rock. From there you can reach the Tower of Hera on top of Death Mountain."
Link kept searching, and found a small tile that shone with a magical blue light. He wondered whether this was the magical teleporter the old man had told him about. There was only one way to find out, and he stepped into the light. Before he knew what was happening, the real world began to fade away, and Link found himself in a different world. This world bore a resemblance to the real world, but everything was twisted. Nothing looked quite healthy or wholesome. The sky boiled black and blood-red, and lightning arched across the sky. And Link realized that he felt strange. Looking down at himself, he gasped in horror. He was still wearing his old clothes, but his body had changed into something like a timid, pink rabbit! Link realized that he was in the Dark World.
Link was astounded. He couldn't reach his shield, and he couldn't even draw his own sword to defend himself. As he walked along, he noticed on odd couple: a demon kicking a defenseless little ball creature. The demon was in a bad mood, and impatiently told Link how he had come to find the Power of Gold but instead was turned into a freak, unable to get back to the real world. He yelled angrily that if only he had the Moon Pearl from the Tower of Hera he could get back to his original shape.
The ball creature was friendlier, and told Link about the world he was in. This world was like the real world, but evil had twisted it. The Golden Power was what changed Link's shape to reflect what was in his heart and mind. As for himself, he was always changing his mind, so the Triforce had turned him into a ball. He told Link that if he had a ball called the Moon Pearl he could keep his original shape.
Link realized that this Dark World was similar in many ways to the Light World. He sort of recognized the Death Mountain surroundings. However, in this location there should have been Spectacle Rock. This gave Link an idea. He stood where Spectacle Rock should have been, and gazed into his Magic Mirror. The world around him faded away, and a second later Link was standing in the Light World, on top of Spectacle Rock! Link could now get to the Tower of Hera by simply hopping off the other side of the rock.
As Link climbed to the top of the mountain tower, fending off monsters, he noticed that some
switches on the ground would change the floor layout. This way Link could hop down into
new areas on the floor below him. Link used this trick to fall down in front of a large
chest surrounded by holes in the ground. Inside was a beautiful crystal ball, shining
with a red tint: the Moon Pearl. Link still had to get the last Pendant, and continued his climb.
A horrible caterpillar monster, called a Moldorm, was guarding the last Pendant. Link was
bounced violently back while trying to get close enough to hurt it. He was bounced off the edge and down
a floor, but persistently climbed back up and tried again. At last he discovered the
Moldorm's weak spot: its delicate tail. Watching its movements carefully, Link hit the tail again
and again, enraging the large worm. The Moldorm moved faster and faster, but could not avoid Link's
sword. With the Moldorm destroyed, Link now had the red Pendant of Wisdom.
