Chapter 3: The Old Forest, the pond, and The Big One

Kavi pushed off the edge of the cliff and began sliding down the rope. When she reached the middle, she stopped as the rope bellied. She looked up and noticed, to her annoyance, that the opposite cliff, the one with the Old Forest on it, was higher then the one she had been on.

"Oh, that's just GREAT!" Kavi muttered under her breath.
With her left hand, Kavi grabbed the rope that stretched across
to each cliff and with her right, slung the knotted piece of rope back
into her pack. Then she began pulling herself hand over hand up the rope.

She happened to glance down ( though she had fully intended not
to ) at the dizzying drop below. It had once just been huge pillars of stone standing out of the water, ( as, of course, Aryll had told her) but since the water had been shrinking away, it had revealed that the stone pillars jutted out of one huge stone that, if her grip failed, she would land on and know
what a pancake felt like.

Kavi swallowed and looked back up at the opposite cliff which was much nearer, but getting harder and harder to reach. Finally, she reached up, with much difficulty, and grabbed the edge of the cliff.
She pulled herself over the cliff, rolled over, and just lay there for a few minutes. Soon, she got up, repositioned her backpack, and walked to the cave just in front of her.

Inside everything became dark as only a forest can make it.
The sunlight streamed in between the leafy boughs of many different trees that she didn't know the names of, causing dappled patterns of light and shadow to play on the dead leaf loam of bygone years that rustled that softly under her bare
feet.

Kavi looked at the quiet place and saw that there was just one area
of trees surrounded by natural stone walls.
( Again, if any of my readers have played The Wind Waker, then you know what this place looks like) Kavi sighed, a little discouraged at the thought that her search had ended so soon. But her feet wouldn't move away.

She continued looking all round her and finally noticed a little path on her right that seemed to lead to the top of the far wall. She slowly walked toward the path with her staff at the ready, wary
of any danger. Kavi walked slowly up the path to the top of the back wall and looked down.

( I am quite sure that many of you expected a log in the middle, and would probably have laughed at me and told me, that of course, this is years later. But it was no longer there. )

She jumped down by way of some stone ledges near her feet, and stood there listening. To her left, she could hear sounds like grunts and roars, but everything in front of her was clear. This area, like the previous one, was surrounded by stone walls. But the one to the left was much lower than the rest.

Kavi walked up to a large, round, flat-topped rock near to the wall,
though it was much farther away then she would have liked.
She climbed onto it and gauged the distance between her and the wall with her eye.

Suddenly, she made a flying leap and landed on the wall, tripped,
and fell down the other side, which luckily wasn't very high. Kavi jumped up in case of danger, but there was none.

To her left, she could hear the grunts and roars getting louder, but they were over yet another wall.
Oh gimme break! she thought, how many walls does this place have?!

To her right, there was a step up rock ledge with a hole in the center. Kavi walked up to this hole and peered in. There was only darkness and Kavi felt no inclination to climb into it. She had always had a problem with small places or underground caves.

With small shivers going up and down her spine, she walked back to the other wall that the grunts and roars were coming from. She could see were an old log had once been, but now all that was left were old bits of wood. She went up to the wall, gauged the height with her eye, jumped up, and grabbed the edge with her fingers.

Pulling herself up took too long in her opinion, but she eventually
made it. She crouched on the wall beside a great tree which, strangely, grew on the wall.
( I'm sure some of you know which tree this is, if you ever bothered rescueing Tetra in The Wind Waker )

The area that she was looking at was surrounded by walls, as the other three areas had been. Kavi rolled her eyes again, but she didn't have much time to think on this.

In the area, were three huge, pig-like beasts that she had never seen
before. ( Had she known what they were, she would have known they were called Moblins, some of the very last in the Great Sea )

Kavi couldn't tell what they were grunting and roaring for, but she could see that they were grouped around a small, mirror-like pond.
Then, as the Moblin that was nearest her with his back turned to her,
turned to punch one of the others, she saw a huddled form laying on the ground near the edge of the pond. From what she could see, it appeared to have feathers, but that was all she could tell.

Suddenly,Kavi saw, to her horror, the biggest of the Moblins raise the bundle to it's mouth. Without thinking, Kavi whipped out her sling and fitted a pebble from a little bag on her belt, into it.

She stood up, yelled, "Hey you!" and let the stone fly. It struck the big one on his cheek, distracting his attention from his meal.

He looked up and saw a girl whirling a sling, then felt another pain on his hand. He dropped the bundle, his hand numb from the stone.

The other two on the other side of the pond looked at each other,
then back up as they heard a roar from their leader. Kavi stood on the wall with her staff at the ready as the big one charged.

He ran to the wall and jumped up to grab her leg. She vaulted over his head, but he managed to catch hold of one of
one of her legs. Kavi hit the ground hard, but kept her head in the game.

She rolled over and twisted her staff into his legs so that he fell. Kavi jumped up and waited for him to get up. He jumped up at almost the same time and hit her with a clenched fist.

She fell again and her staff went flying from her hand, but the moron ran past her to a spear that she hadn't seen lying near the pond. Brilliant stars burst in her head as she jumped up again, feeling a little dizzy as the Moblin ran towards her.

Kavi realized that she had no chance against the huge beast without her staff. Just as he seemed on top of her, she dodged to one side and ducked as he swung his spear. The big lout went charging past her and ran smack into the wall.

Kavi ran for her staff, but before she was nearly close enough, he was charging her again. She whirled round, but she wasn't fast enough. and was smacked in her side where Aryll had hit her that morning, causing another bruise to flower over her first one.

Luckily, she fell near her staff and grabbed it. Kavi jumped up, but the staff was knocked from her grasp. She fell with her back to a wall, and drew her legs up to her chest.

The Moblin stood in front and over her grinning evily and licking his lips. Suddenly, her legs shot out and hit him full in the stomach.
He fell to his knees, gasping for air. Kavi jumped up and hit him several times over the head with a sizable rock she had found.

Finally, he sagged over, dead. She stood there and let the rock slip from her grasp, wanting only to
curl up someplace and sleep.

Suddenly, the other two Moblins had her in their hands. She struggled with all her might, but she was far too tired.

Then one of the Moblins gave a roar and grabbed at something that was scratching the back of his head. He turned to deal with it and let go of Kavi.

Kavi twisted and writhed in a complex move Aryll had taught her,
and wriggled free of the other Moblin. She took a few steps back, then ran at the Moblin, ramming her head into his stomach. The speed sent them both crashing close to the pond.

The Moblin stood up, gasping for air, and Kavi hit him in the stomach again. He teetered on the edge of the pond, over balanced, and fell in.

Kavi watched him as he sank out of sight. She looked round, hearing only complete silence, trying make her eyes focus so she could fight the last Moblin.

She glanced back down at the pond, then sank to the ground near it. Just before she blacked out, she mumbled, "Must be bottemless."
