Chapter 4: The Hawk

When Kavi awoke, she could see a large bird standing right in front of her face.

“Finally, took you long enough to wake up,” she heard.

“Holy…!” exclaimed Kavi as she jumped up. She backed up a little and narrowed her eyes at the… hawk. She could now see it was a hawk.

“Who said that?” she asked as calmly as she could, but she knew there was only one thing that could have said that.

“Who else?” the voice asked, but Kavi hadn’t seen the hawk’s beak move.

“You…you can talk?” she asked, playing for time to find her staff.

“No, I can swim! Of course I can talk! Well think, anyway.”

Kavi could now tell that the voice was in her head, she wasn’t actually hearing it.

“How do you do it?” she asked the hawk.

“Not me…you,” Kavi heard.

“ME?!” Kavi jumped back a ways.

“Oh, brother. Why do they always do that?” and Kavi thought she had actually seen the hawk roll it’s eyes, “in all of my travels, there have only been a few who could hear my thoughts. I’ve found out that they are called an Empath.”

“An Empath?” asked Kavi more to herself, “so I’m an Empath. Greeeat.”

“Anyway, your obviously a girl, I suppose you have a name?” Kavi asked the hawk.

“Darn right, Warbeak,” said the hawk, “and you?”

“Kavi.”

“Kavi, just Kavi?” asked Warbeak.

“Look, can we forget how short my name is? I didn’t make fun of your name, though it’s okay as far as bird names go.” Warbeak bristled a bit at this, but Kavi had found her staff and was heading to the wall she had jumped off of, to get her pack. As she was walking by one of the dead Moblins, she noticed that it’s eyes had been pecked out.

“Oh gross!” she exclaimed.

“Had to be done,” said Warbeak.

Kavi turned to her, “Ewww, you did that?!” She couldn't help feeling a little queasy.

“Duuhhh! When your as small as me, you have to use every weakness to win.”

“Ok, ok I get it.” said Kavi “ let’s get rid of these, I’m sure I’ll be coming back to this place.”

In truth, Warbeak couldn’t help a bit, so Kavi had to roll the dead Moblins into the bottomless pond herself. As she watched the last Moblin sink down, she saw cloudy figures moving about in the pond. She narrowed her eyes as they began to become clearer.

Warbeak interrupted her as she said, “Come on, Slowpoke. Your taking forever.”

Kavi rounded on her with her staff upraised, “Ok! I’ve had enough of your name calling and saracasm! Turns out, in case you didn’t notice, that I’M the one who just did all the work while you sat on your lazy tail-feathers.”

Warbeak showed no fear, “Oh so your just going to kill me after you saved me then I saved you and we both risked our lives fighting those Moblins after we got into it. Seems like a waste to me, if you just wanted to kill me, you should have let THEM!”

Kavi lowered her staff and raised an eyebrow, “That bundle on the ground was you? The one that the Big One was about to…eat?!”

“YES! CAN’T YOU PUT TWO AND TWO TOGTHER?!”

“Wow…you can really make someone feel stupid,” said Kavi.

“It’s a gift,” said Warbeak.

“So the Big One was going to eat you…alive?!” Kavi shuddered.

Warbeak shuddered too, “I can understand your disgust at that one.”

Kavi was dying to ask her what had happened, but she thought that it might be rude. However, Warbeak was way ahead of her.

“Look, sit down and I’ll tell you what happened,” she said, so Kavi sat down near the clear little pond and listened to Warbeak’s story.

“There are four continents that surround the Great Sea, with channels in between each one that lead into another sea that surround them. I come from the Northern Mountains. The reason they are called that is because it is a continent, but the entire thing is one range of mountains. I came south looking for warmer weather, ( I honestly don’t know how the others stand how cold it is up there ) and to go sight-seeing the Great Sea, were it is said Hyrule was flooded. I visited the Forsaken Fortress and Windfall and all the historical landmarks that the Hero of Winds visited. I had one more island to visit, Outset Island. I had just asked a seagull directions and was in sight of the island when a dreadful south wind sprang up. I had one heckuva time getting here, and by the time I did, I was worn to a frazzle. Suddenly, the wind dropped, and I fell into this forest right smack on the one you call the Big One’s head." Warbeak shuddered.

"I fainted from exhaustion. I came to with a lot of grunting and roaring in my ears. I was still very groggy as I listened to their thoughts. Mostly very unintelligible but there were some things about who was going to eat me and the Big One said he was going to be the one to eat me. Then he raised me to his mouth and I really couldn’t move at all yet when I heard a ‘Hey you’. Of course Big and Stupid whirls around and gives me a worse headache then I already had. Then he drops me and I get a front row seat to watch your fight, which was pretty good for a mere chick." At this Kavi bristled a bit at being called a ‘mere chick’. Warbeak continued on, ignoring her. "Then I finally wake up a little more when the other two Moblins had you and attacked the back of his head. Then you know the rest."

“So there are continents surrounding us and we are like a huge inland sea?” asked Kavi.

“In a way. The continents are divided by great channels of the sea. We can‘t reach each other unless by boat or by flying.”

“And those big ugly beasts are called Moblins?” Kavi wondered.

“What, did you grow up in a cave?”

“Maybe,” muttered Kavi. Warbeak rolled her eyes in resignation.

“Alright then,” said Kavi as she stood up, “I’m going to be heading back down the mountain. If your looking for things connected with the Hero of Winds, then you’ll want to meet my friend. She happens to have known him very well.” She grabbed her pack and staff, and looked at the hawk.

Warbeak smiled a little, “Alright, you’ve piqued my interest.” They climbed over the back wall and walked out of the cave entrance.

Is good, the only suggestion I'd make is to delete the 2nd instance of Warbeak in this sentence: "“Darn right, Warbeak,” said Warbeak, “and you?” " - something else - anything else really. Kavi good name I like her.

Thanx! wink.gif And thanx for the advice on that sentance. I thought that one might not work.
